Deep sea hatchetfishes are found throughout the world's oceans. They usually occupy a depth of around a hundred meters. They can range from 2.8 cm (1.1 inch) to 12 cm (4.7 in) in size depending on the species. With their silvery bodies and ventral bioluminescent photophores, they can utilize a form of counter illumination to hide from predators. The pupils of their upward facing eyes are well developed and cant filter out the faintest traces of light in the deep sea, allowing them to find food.
