Walter Ernest O’Neal Yeo (1890-1960)
Yeo, a British gunner during WWI, suffered cordite burns over most of his face aboard the H.M.S. Warspite during the Battle of Jutland in 1916. His burns resulted in extensive facial scarring and included the loss of his upper and lower eyelids. His tight scar tissue caused the inner surface of his eyelids to turn outward. He is believed to be the first individual to receive extensive plastic surgery.
