Henry Ralph Lumley (1892 – 1918)
At the start of WWI, Lumley was commissioned as an officer in the Royal Flying Corps and went to the Central Flying School for pilot training. During his school training his aircraft crashed and Lumley was badly burned, losing his lips, eyebrows and most of the skin on his face. His left eye was burned out, and he was mostly blind in his right eye. He died of heart failure during the attempt at surgical facial reconstruction.
