William Vicarage (1897-19??)

Vicarage, a British sailor, suffered cordite burns while serving aboard the H.M.S. Malaya at the Battle of Jutland in 1916. His injuries included the loss of his nose and part of his ear. His tight scar tissue caused the inner surface of his eyelids and lips to turn outward. He is considered to be the first patient to receive the tubed pedicle method of reconstruction. This method of plastic surgery allowed for mass tissue grafting at a time when antibiotics had not yet been developed.
